Auditions are by Appointment Only.

Please Note: If you have registered for the 2017 auditions, links to excerpts are below.

New and Returning musicians must register with the orchestra. YPSO auditions and rehearsals take place at First Congregational Church of Oakland (FCCO) located at 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland.  Rehearsals are Monday nights throughout the school year from 5:45 - 9:45 p.m.

Excerpts- please play all sections marked in brackets:

Violins should use the "All Violins" plus one or both of Violin 1 and Violin 2.

AUDITIONS ARE HELD BY APPOINTMENT IN 15 MINUTE INTERVALS:  Applicants will be asked to play any three-octave scale, specific excerpts, and a single movement of any piece (kindly provide two photocopies of your piece for the judges).

Once you have registered, we will confirm your audition time and excerpts via email.  For any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at  ypso@ypsomusic.org. Percussionists will be asked to demonstrate their skills on a variety of instruments (including but not limited to snare drum and timpani) but do not have designated excerpts to perform.

Musicians will be asked to prepare and play orchestral excerpts at their audition and for most, there will be no sight-reading. The sheet music for the excerpts can be found in the list above. Also take note that excerpt descriptions include a metronome marking (e.g. 108 to the half note). Do not bring an accompanist. Percussionists should bring their own mallets, etc.

There is no audition application fee. Tuition for the 2017-2018 season is $1500 per student. A non-refundable deposit of $400 is due upon acceptance for new members and by July 15 for continuing members. The balance of tuition is due on or before the season opening parent meeting in September 2017. YPSO can offer installment plans as necessary.
YPSO awards partial tuition scholarships with work exchange based on financial need. Scholarship applications are posted with the registration materials under the members section.
There is no specific minimum age, however, there are age considerations. YPSO plays challenging repertoire, rehearsals run three and a half hours and last late into the evening on Mondays, and students generally enjoy participating when they make friends in the orchestra. Most of the students are in late middle school and high school, with a few college age students, too.  If you are uncertain about auditioning, please contact the orchestra manager at ypso@ypsomusic.org.
