YPSO FAQ's and Logistics
YPSO rehearses most Monday evenings at First Congregational Church of Oakland (2501 Harrison St. Oakland) from 5:45-9:45PM. There is also an annual weekend retreat to Carmel Valley in the Fall and three Saturday afternoon intensives during the year.
There is no audition application fee. Tuition for the 2019-2020 season is $1600 per student. A non-refundable deposit of $400 is due upon acceptance for new members and by August 1 for continuing members. The balance of tuition is due on or before the season opening parent meeting in September. YPSO can offer installment plans as necessary.
No eligible student will be denied for lack of funds. YPSO awards partial tuition scholarships with work exchange and payment plans based on financial need. Scholarship applications are posted with the registration materials under the members section. Members who have received financial aid in previous seasons need to reapply each season.
MINIMUM AGE AND CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT
There is no specific minimum age, however, there are age considerations. YPSO plays challenging repertoire, rehearsals run three and a half hours and last late into the evening on Mondays, and students generally enjoy participating when they make friends in the orchestra. Most of the students are in late middle school and high school, with a few college age students as well. Many students have previous orchestra or band experience. If you are uncertain about auditioning, please contact the orchestra manager at firstname.lastname@example.org. We strongly encourage all students to maintain enrollment in appropriate school ensembles, and we have an agreement with Oakland Unified School District that all OUSD members currently in their school ensemble must remain in that program when enrolling in YPSO.
Auditions are held at First Congregational Church of Oakland: 2501 Harrison St. Oakland, CA
AUDITIONS ARE HELD BY APPOINTMENT IN 15 MINUTE INTERVALS: Applicants will be asked to play any three-octave scale of the player’s choice, specific excerpts (listed above), and a single movement of any piece (kindly provide two photocopies of your piece for the judges). 2019-2020 auditions will have a sight-reading portion as well.
Once you have registered, we will confirm your audition time and excerpts via email. For any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at email@example.com. Percussionists will be asked to demonstrate their skills on a variety of instruments (including but not limited to snare drum and timpani) and should prepare a snare drum or mallet solo from a piece that they have previously worked on.
Do not bring an accompanist. Percussionists should bring their own mallets, sticks, etc.
